Hotels and dining

The best time for your travel to Egypt is between October and May. However all Muslim festivals are so colorful and interesting for the western traveler that it is good to be seen. In fact almost all holidays in Egypt are related to religious ceremonies and celebrations. Nitaq festival, which takes place in Cairo at the beginning of March, is a unique art festival: it attracts poets, musicians, actors, and different artists from all over the world.

The accommodation in Egypt during your travels is not a problem; there are all types of hotels, starting from 5 stars to 1 star only. You can make your choice according to the budget you have for your holiday. However, you should know that 3 stars hotel in Egypt is of lower quality than in Europe or Japan. At the same time the prices for luxury 4 and 5 stars hotels are much lower than in other countries. Therefore check all possibilities for accommodation before making a reservation. We strongly recommend you at least 4 stars hotels for best experience and relax.

Dining is an adventure for people who would like to try the original Egyptian cuisine. The traditional Egyptian food is quite similar to the cuisine of North Africa: you will find here hummus, tabouleh, shish kebab and tahini. Most of the dishes during the day are vegetarian, based on vegetables, brown bean, garlic and local species. All big cities and tourist places offer great variety of restaurants with national cuisine.

For those of you who would prefer to continue with international food, it is not a problem: there are plenty of restaurants that offer international dishes in their authentic version. However, we would highly recommend you always to leave space for a traditional Egyptian dessert, which is extremely delicious and original.

Tipping in restaurants and hotels is very typical for Egypt. Tipping is called here “baksheesh”. The range of baksheesh could vary, but it is normal to be around 10% to 15%. The truth is that people expect baksheesh for every service here: taxi drivers, museum guides, tour assistants, camel drivers, baggage handlers, etc will rely on your generosity. Actually daily tipping can be a good amount of money, but remember that you are in a third world country, where people are extremely poor. When you don’t know how much to give as baksheesh, count the equivalent of $1 to $2, which is appropriate tip for several services.
