When you prepare yourself for your travel to Egypt you certainly will need… money. Here you may find some useful information and tips, concerning the financial aspects of your tourist adventures.

The local Currency in Egypt is LE (from Livre Egyptienne) or Egyptian pound. One pound contains 100 piaster or Ganaesh (in Arabic). One US dollar is equivalent to 6-6.5 Egyptian pounds (check the daily ratio). There are notes for the Egyptian pounds, but for 50 and 25 piaster as well. The coins for piaster go down to 5 piaster. When you need to change money, better do it in banks. All banks accept Euros, US dollars and British pounds. Better do not take the risk to change other currencies, because of the bank ratios. You showed know as well that Irish pounds, Scottish pounds, or Australian and New Zealand dollars are not accepted. As an average the banks are open from 8.30 AM to 2.00 PM and work from Sunday (take it in mind, as this is totally different from the western world) till Thursday. There are bank offices at the major ports and the airports, which are open 24 hours, 7 days a week.

Being a well-developed country for tourists, Egypt has done several efforts to make the life of travelers easier. If you would like to use your credit or debit cards, do not worry: various hotels and shops accept Visa, Mater Card, American Express, JCB and all Euro cards. ATM machines are also available and they accept generally Master Card, Visa and Cirrus cards.

If you run out of cash money, there is no ATM around your place, or your debit or credit card is not accepted, you can use the very well developed system for getting wired money from abroad. A lot of Western Union branches exist everywhere in Egypt, so there is no any “chance” for you to “bankrupt” during your travel. You need just few minutes to get your money, sent from any point in the world.

Our final advice for tourists, who will travel for first time to Egypt is that Egypt is quite cheap country, compared to many other travel destinations in the world. Several things are cheaper here, including trips, accommodation, and entry fees. Therefore do not take too much money cash. And make the change after coming to Egypt: the ratios here are much better than in all other places in the world.
