Alexandria

The “Pearl of the Mediterranean” – this is the world known nickname of Alexandria, the second largest megapolis of Egypt. If you plane a travel to Egypt, you have to include this city in your program. The reason is simple – this is the famous, exceptional place in the world, founded in 331 BC by the Great Alexander. This is the former capital of the Greco-Roman Egypt, which in the times of Napoleon was just … a small fishing village. But the history is history, and probably there is no person in the world that don’t know the name of the Pharos of Alexandria – one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.

There are many places of interest for tourist in Alexandria. When you plan your travel to Egypt, better think about 2 or 3 days to stay in Alexandria. You need several hous to spend in Old Alexandria – a part of the city, which follows the road between the Pharos Island and the mainland. Actually, the main districts of the oldest part of the city are known as “The Turkish Suburb”. You may see the impressive Abu-El-Abbas Mosque and the small Terbana Mosque. You will find several small shops here, which sell different goods: from Bedouin clothes to jewelry.

The Corniche avenue has an opposite charm to Old Alexandria: it is full of new buildings, casinos, and golden beaches. The avenue is built late in the 20th century in next door to a fortress walls with towers that has been used for protection till the end of the 13th century. Today this place is full of live, not only because of the night liveliness, but because of the culture as well. On the end of Corniche on west, the new city Library is built. Here you will find the impressive collection of the Royal Museum of Jewelry. If you need world-class accommodation during your travel to Egypt, Muntaza Gardens near Corniche, is the best place. Great part of the modern hotels in Alexandria is situated here.

Another must see in Alexandria is the Mahmudiya Canal, which starts south from the Greek district. Along the canal the business class and industrial districts of Alexandria are situated. Here you may enjoy a walk in the Antoniadis Gardens, which has been a scenery of many historical events. The great poet Callimachus lived here. The Water Traffic Circle can be also found here: an impressive villa in avant-garde architectural style, built by Auguste Perret, a famous French architect.
